3300 offers documented surface-burning performance when the specification does not require FRTW. 4400 is the system to evaluate for documented fire-retardant-treated wood applications, subject to the listed substrate, assembly and project approval.
ASTM E84 evaluates surface-burning behavior. The extended evaluation used for documented FRTW applications is a different qualification from a standard Class A result. A wall’s fire-resistance rating belongs to the complete listed assembly, not an individual stud.
Neither treatment makes wood noncombustible or fireproof. Specified fire-performance warranty coverage is not insurance against loss or damage from a fire. Temporary construction exposure is not the same as exterior weathering qualification.
Coverage depends on the selected treatment, eligible wood, project records and complete written terms. A warranty is a defined remedy, not a promise that damage can never happen.
